The Art of Debating in the Oxford Union
What do you know about the culture of debating?
Debating in various forms has a long history and can be traced back to the philosophical and political debates of Ancient Greece, such as Athenian democracy, Shastrartha in Ancient India. Modern forms of debating and the establishment of debating societies occurred during the Age of Enlightenment in the 18th century.
Debating societies emerged in London in the early eighteenth century, and were a prominent feature of society until the end of the century.
The tradition developed and continued in student debating societies. The most famous of them is the Oxford Union. The Oxford Union Society, commonly referred to simply as the Oxford Union, is a debating society in the city of Oxford, England, whose membership is drawn primarily from the University of Oxford. Founded in 1823, it is one of Britain's oldest university unions.
